Netflix may have just certified its Christmas Day-debuting series “Bridgerton” as a hit, but the show wasn’t the hottest streaming title of December.
That’s according to figures from 7Park Data shared exclusively with Variety Intelligence Platform that suggest that “The Mandalorian” and “Soul” were the two biggest streaming titles across Disney+, Apple TV+, Hulu, Prime Video and Netflix last month.
“The Mandalorian” reached nearly 28% of 7Park Data panel members in December, just slightly beating out Pixar’s theater-skipping “Soul” at about 27%. These titles both reached more than double the amount of panel members any other title 7Park Data measured last month, including Netflix’s “Christmas Chronicles” (12%) and “Bridgerton” (11%).
“Mandalorian” and “Soul” also helped Disney+ account for four of the top 10 titles in 7Park Data’s December cross-platform audience share ranking, the most it’s notched in that ranking since August (when it also accounted for 4 titles).
7Park Data currently only measures viewership of Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV+ and Disney+. Panel members must have watched two of those platforms and two minutes of a title in December to be counted in the December cross-platform ranking.
7Park Data tabulates its data by measuring the SVOD viewership of over 15,000 U.S. households that occur on connected TVs (i.e. Roku, et al.). Mobile viewership is not reflected in 7Park’s data.
The strong reception of “The Mandalorian” and “Soul” in December helped Disney+ nab a second consecutive 7Park Data cross-platform audience share ranking win, which typically goes to Netflix.
But it’s not like Netflix was annihilated last month, as its “Virgin River” and “Bridgerton” titles both slightly edged out “Soul” and “Mandalorian” in terms of time spent by 7Park Data panel viewers watching more than one SVOD in December.
Perhaps more surprising is how 7Park Data’s December cross-platform audience share and time spent rankings each only contain titles from Disney+ or Netflix. That suggests the catalogs of Apple TV+, Hulu, and Prime Video didn’t reel in multiple–SVOD viewing consumers as heavily as those of Netflix and Disney+ did last month.
The strong performing December slates of Disney+ and Netflix align with how 7Park Data found that time spent on those platforms last month was the highest its been since August. Households spent more time last month on both Hulu and Amazon than in months prior, although time spent on those platforms is still down from August.
Time spent on Apple last month was up from November and August, likely thanks in part to shows like “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Truth Be Told.” Those three titles were Apple TV+’s top performing December titles by time spent, according to 7Park Data.
Meanwhile, top-performing December titles from Prime Video and Hulu that didn’t crack 7Park Data’s December cross-platform rankings above include “The Wilds” and “Happiest Season.”
