Star Andy Serkis, director Matt Reeves, and senior VFX supervisor Joe Letteri joined the Variety Screening Series presented by FilmStruck to talk about “War for the Planet of the Apes,” Serkis’ emotional attachment to his character, and capturing emotion with special effects technology.

Serkis delved into the process he undergoes to portray the main character, his ape Caesar, and revealed that “War” was his most personal film in the series to date.

“I always approach Caesar as an outsider and that he was almost a human being within an ape’s skin,” he said. “I approached Caesar really from my own point of view, not really looking outside anymore. Because this was the most personal film for me, because it is about, ‘What would you do if this happened to your family?’ If it was your family that were decimated and you had to deal with that.”
