“Vice” director Adam McKay got chills when he first saw Christian Bale in full costume as former vice president Dick Cheney, he said Variety’s Screening Series.

“He came out in the makeup, in the suit, the wig was right and he had done all his character work,” McKay recalled. “He started doing the walk of Dick Cheney, and it was one of the most chilling things I’ve ever seen in my life. The hairs stood up on my arms, without exaggeration. I said, ‘He’s not playing him, he summoned him. He’s in the room.'”

The scathing biopic won the Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling at the 2019 awards, beating out “Mary Queen of Scots” and “Border.”

“I came out to the set, I had not a clue that it was Christian Bale,” said editor Hank Corwin. “Honestly I wasn’t quite sure. It certainly wasn’t Dick Cheney at the time, but the guy emanated these bad vibes. Everyone was sort of afraid of him.”
