Director Fernando Meirelles knew several scenes from his Netflix film “The Two Popes” would have to take place in the Sistine Chapel, but there was one problem.

“They didn’t allow us. They never replied to our emails,” he said during the Variety Screening Series.

Meirelles had known filming inside the chapel would be a long shot, so the production team got to work creating a stand-in for the pope’s official residence in Vatican City.

“It was 14 meters high because of the height of the studio. The roof was CGI,” he said. “There are a lot of digital effects in the film that you don’t notice.”

“The Two Popes” stars Jonathan Pryce as Pope Frances and Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI, and it explores their relationship and transition of power. They both received Oscar nominations for their roles on Monday.
