Anthony McCarten, who wrote the forthcoming film, “The Two Popes,” found inspiration from the tumultuous history of the Catholic Church. “I was raised Catholic so I was very aware, in 2013, when Pope Benedict’s resignation was significant — it shattered, in fact, a 700 year-old tradition,” McCarten said. “So the question in my mind became ‘Why?’ Why would the most traditional pope in the modern world do the most untraditional thing? So that led me down the rabbit hole of research.”
