“Rocketman” star Taron Egerton discussed the process of finding the right singing voice to play Elton John, during the Variety Screening Series presented by Vudu.
“We would figure how we were gonna approach these songs and how we could use the lyrics to move the story forward and to reveal things about what Elton and indeed some of the other characters are feeling at certain moments. That just felt like a really gloriously creative time,” he said. “And it was also a time for me to experiment with my singing and my voice. We all knew that we wanted it to sound more rocky than musical theater or Broadway, just because we were depicting the life of a rock star. Elton finds a gravel in his voice that we wanted to try and cultivate, too.”
Egerton had been interested in the role years before production started, but Tom Hardy had originally been attached. Then one day producer Matthew Vaughn approached Egerton on the set of “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.”
“[He] basically asked, ‘How would you feel about playing Elton John?'” to which Egerton replied, “I’m sure I could find a window in the schedule somewhere.”
