During Variety‘s TV Summit in London, Ricky Gervais spoke to Variety’s Henry Chu about jokes regarding controversial subjects like death and depression in his Netflix series “After Life.” The comedian plays a depressed and suicidal widower who alarms those around him with his blunt and bleakly humorous attitude toward his wife’s death and his own overwhelming grief.

“I love discomfort around a subject. There’s a myth that there are certain things you shouldn’t joke about. It’s nonsense,” he said. “People get offended when they mistake the subject of a joke with the actual target. And they’re not necessarily the same, particularly when you’re dealing with satire or irony. There’s no subject you shouldn’t joke about. It depends on the joke.”
