Reese Witherspoon and director Jean-Marc Vallée discussed their latest collaboration — “Big Little Lies” — during Variety’s cover shoot for HBO’s upcoming limited series.

It’s a reunion for the creative team, who first paired up on the 2014 film “Wild,” based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir about her journey of self-discovery as she hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. The role earned Witherspoon an Oscar nomination — as well as “a brother, a partner” in Vallée, as she says.

Vallée, too, is quick to return the compliment. “She makes it look easy. She’s so good with comedy, and drama, and going emotional, and going into all those nuances. My god … effortless,” Vallée says about the actress.

Witherspoon, an avid producer, also revealed whether she would ever direct.
