Oscar winner Octavia Spencer revealed that she beat out Reese Witherspoon for the starring role in the Apple TV Plus series “Truth Be Told,” during the Variety and Apple TV Plus Collaborations panel.
“I think Reese realized that I was better suited for [the role] because I stay up late in the night watching murder TV, and it’s kinda my thing,” Spencer said. “[Nichelle Tramble Spellman and I] bonded so quickly in the room for our love of true crime and understanding it. I think Reese was fine with me.”
“Truth Be Told” is an upcoming drama series based on Kathleen Barber’s novel “Are You Sleeping.” The show stars Spencer, Aaron Paul, Lizzy Caplan, Elizabeth Perkins, Michael Beach and Mekhi Phifer. Executive produced by Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter, the series premieres on Dec. 6.
