Long before she was an Oscar-winning leading lady, Nicole Kidman had to fight for roles.

Kidman and her “To Die For” costar Casey Affleck reminisced about the 1995 Gus Van Sant thriller for the fifth season of Variety and PBS’ series “Actors on Actors.”

At that point in her career, Kidman was mainly known for her roles opposite her then beau Tom Cruise, including “Days of Thunder” and “Far and Away” when she auditioned for the manipulative and seductive TV weathercaster Suzanne Stone.

“No one thought I could do it and I think the studio didn’t want me, and I think it went through a bunch of other actors,” Kidman admitted. “I called Gus and I said, ‘please, give me the chance, I beg you,’ because the writing was so strong.”

The film was Affleck’s first. Check out the clip above to hear about both actors’ experiences.

The interview will air in its entirety on Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” Season 5, presented by The Venetian Las Vegas, which debuts on PBS SoCal on Jan. 3.
