During Variety‘s Entertainment and Technology Summit on Sept. 5, co-editor-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein spoke to Deloitte’s Peter Giorgio and the NBA’s Jeff Marsilio about the changing landscape of fan engagement due to rapidly evolving technology.
Marsilio said he and his team thought about fan engagement and social media “almost completely differently” when he first started at the NBA six years ago. “The platforms have evolved a lot and the way that we engage through these platforms has changed a lot as well.”
Giorgio agreed, saying the number of online platforms that exist today has also significantly affected fan engagement. “Fundamentally, in a lot of ways, what technology has done to sports is just change the entire landscape, the entire ability of not just the leagues to be able to engage with fans, but also the players to engage with fans, and also the fans with one another,” he said.
