Greta Gerwig discussed her directorial debut, the festival circuit breakout hit “Lady Bird” starring Saoirse Ronan, at the Toronto Film Festival.

“Sacramento is where I grew up so I felt like it had not been given its proper due in cinema,” Gerwig said. “So I wanted to start with that, but none of the events in the movie literally happened in life, but it all has a core of emotional truth that feels close to life.”

Stars Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts also stopped by the Variety Studio Presented by AT&T.
