James Franco revealed to Dustin Hoffman during their “Actors on Actors” chat that the two actually have an unlikely connection: it was Jonah Hill’s relationship with Hoffman’s daughter that inspired Franco’s comedy with Bryan Cranston, “Why Him?”

“Jonah was talking to Ben Stiller on the set one time, and he’s like, ‘Oh man, I’m going to go on vacation with Dustin Hoffman. Like, I don’t know him.’ And it was really early in his relationship,” said Franco, with Hoffman interjecting, “That’s true.” “And he was really, like, nervous about it and he’d make a bad impression or something like that. And the producer, Shawn Levy, overheard it. He’s like, ‘That’s a great story.'”

The seventh season of Variety‘s “Actors on Actors,” presented by Google Home, will air from Jan. 2 to Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. on PBS SoCal KOCE.
