Jaden Smith was joined by his “Skate Kitchen” co-star Rachelle Vinberg and writer-director Crystal Moselle at the Variety Studio presented by AT&T at the Sundance Film Festival to discuss the movie, which Smith says will create a “skating epidemic.”
“If you watch this movie, you’re going to want to go and skate,” Smith says. “If you’re a guy or a girl, it doesn’t matter.”
Vinberg says she was virtually playing herself in the film. “The hardest part was tapping into old feelings and emotions that aren’t so nice,” she says.
The project is based on Vinberg’s experience of coming to New York and meeting a group of girls who were completely different than what she was used to, Moselle explains.
“Telling this story from a female perspective was definitely something that interested me because it’s a very intimidating sport,” Moselle says.
Smith says the “outcast story” drew him to the role, as well as the opportunity to cast a light on female skaters around the world.

And, [...]

SAG Foundation president and award-winning actor Courtney B. Vance doesn’t understand why last week’s Oscar nominations were so white (again). “I don’t know why because I know the projects are there,” he told Variety’s Marc Malkin at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, referring to the amount of films directed and starring people of color in 2019. Only two of […]
