The cast of “Heart Beats Loud” sat down at Variety’s Sundance Studio presented by AT&T to talk about shooting the film in 19 days, learning new styles of music, and how the film references other “grounded musicals.”

Writer-director Brett Haley explained that they wanted to use music to create the emotional context of particular scenes in the film.

“Marc [Basch, the film’s co-writer] and I made it as much about love as possible, between a father and a daughter, but also the power of music, and that music can say what words can’t say,” Haley said. “So instead of a dialogue scene between Nick and Kiersey’s characters, who play father and daughter, they’ll sing a song and they’ll relate their emotions through song.”
