“Game of Thrones” is on its way out, which means winter is finally coming for HBO. The biggest television show in the world, “Game of Thrones” has certainly had a large impact on HBO’s business, but will the premium cabler lose subscribers without Westeros?

With an A-list roster of actors and creators, HBO’s slate is plenty full — even without “Game of Thrones.” (Meryl Streep, anyone?) Plus, the network is developing a handful of “Thrones” spinoffs, including a prequel series, starring Naomi Watts.

HBO has powered through losses before, which is the nature of TV. No matter how successful or iconic (“The Sopranos” and “Sex and the City”), every show has a shelf life.

Variety senior correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister sat down with chief television critic Daniel D’Addario to discuss the imminent new era of HBO.
