Do Audiences Even Want Another 'Dumbo'?

Dumbo is back in a live-action remake of the 1941 animated film, begging the question, did audiences even ask for it?

From “Dumbo” to “Lion King” to “Aladdin,” Disney is cranking up its modern-day reboot machine, causing critics to raise their eyebrows at the lack of new ideas swirling around the mega-studio. For certain properties, like “Lion King,” the box office potential is a no-brainer — but “Dumbo” doesn’t quite fall into the category of Disney’s major commercial successes.

Variety’s senior correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister sits down with chief film critic Owen Gleiberman to discuss the 2019 version of “Dumbo,” its stars Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton, and the Disney trend of live-action reboots.
