Hollywood veteran Danny Trejo credits attending 12 Step meetings and having a good support system with his 51-year sobriety.

The “Death Wish” actor opened up about his sobriety and former struggles with addiction for Variety’s first ever Recovery Issue.

“I go to meetings,” he said. “I still go to meetings! I just finished speaking at a meeting last Thursday. I stay close to people — I honestly believe that sobriety and being clean depends on your support system. You’ve got this system of people around you that want to stay clean and sober.”

Trejo explained that after going to prison and joining a 12 Step Program, he now associates drugs with prison time: “When I even think about drugs, automatically, I think about having to shower with 50 men in prison.”
