Chadwick Boseman, who hosted “Saturday Night Live” in April, shared the meaning behind one of his hilarious sketches.
Boseman stepped into his “Black Panther” character T’Challa, who was a contestant on “Black Jeopardy.” In the sketch, Kenan Thompson, in character as the host, reads a card from the category “White People” that says, “Your friend Karen brings her potato salad to your cookout.”
T’Challa responds, “I sense that this white woman does not season her food.” He continues, “Something tells me that I should say, ‘Aw, hell no naw, Karen! Keep your bland-ass potato salad to yourself!’”
The joke elicited plenty of laughs from the live audience, but Boseman says there is another aspect that makes the answer comical. “It’s funny by itself, but they don’t get that it’s an inside joke.”
Boseman explained, “In the African-American experience, potato salad is a thing that even within your family, within your church, within your family reunion. Any barbecue you got to, it’s like anybody can’t bring the potato salad.”
In between laughs with his fellow “Avengers: Infinity War” cast members Danai Gurira and Mark Ruffalo, Boseman adds, “You have to earn the right to bring the potato salad. So, Karen bringing the potato salad is like, ‘Wait, she doesn’t even know what she’s getting into.’”
Hopefully, Boseman has cleared up any confusion about the joke.
