Perfection is rarely achieved in movies, but this heaven-sent concert doc hits the sweet spot. Over two days in January 1972, the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin โ she was 29 at the time โ sweeps into the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts in front of a congregation and testifies to God in song. The blessed thing took nearly half a century to come out because director Sydney Pollack failed to sync the image with the sound. Then digital angels stepped in, and glory, glory, hallelujah!

Vanessa Kirby, who played Princess Margaret on the first two seasons of Netflixโs โThe Crown,โ has returned to the streaming service in the acยญquisition โPieces of a Woman.โ In the Kornรฉl Mundruczรณ film, Kirby plays Martha, whose home birth ends in tragedy, upending her life. The birth scene, early in the movie, is a harrowยญยญing 24-minute single take, based on the experience of โPieces of a Womanโ screenwriter Kata Wรฉber (and her partner, Mundruczรณ). For Amanda Seyfried, whose first film role was Karen in โMean Girls,โ David Fincherโs โMankโ (also on Netflix) was โa dream come true, actually.โ In โMank,โ Seyfriedโs Marion Davies forges a warm bond with Gary Oldmanโs Herman Mankieยญwicz โ but that wonโt stop him from betraying her as he writes โCitizen Kane.โ
The two sat down for a virtual chat forย Variety‘s Actors on Actors, presented by Amazon Studios. Watch the full conversation above.
