The holidays are a time for buying things. TV is a medium for selling things. So what better way to celebrate the thing you stare at all day long and calendar events that correspond to your cultural beliefs than with a bunch of TV-related products? Here are a few that stood out in 2017.
“Snow Falling” from “Jane the Virgin”
So many television shows are adapted from books these days, but every now and then, a book actually comes out of a television show. Such is the case with “Snow Falling,” the debut novel from “Jane the Virgin’s” Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez). Introduced in the third season as a fictionalized version of her love story with Michael (Brett Dier), “Snow Falling” was finally brought to life thanks to ghostwriter Caridad Piñeiro and Simon & Schuster imprint Adams Media.
Riverdale South Side Serpents Jacket
It didn’t take long for a “Riverdale” line to hit Hot Topic. While there is everything from a Jughead-inspired knit beanie to a “Vixens” nameplate necklace to a Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe mug available thanks to Bioworld, the big-ticket item this second season of the CW series is a replica South Side Serpents jacket. Man or woman, you, too, can show your allegiance with this unisex faux leather jacket that may look even better with a “Free FP” button pinned on the lapel. (Yes, they sell that, too.)
TV Biz Books
Whether the TV lovers in your life are by trade or just for fun, there are quite a few books that shine a light on the behind-the-scenes workings of the business. Variety‘s own Cynthia Littleton collaborated with Susanne Daniels on “Season Finale: The Unexpected Rise and Fall of the WB and UPN” and then with Nina Tassler for “What I Told My Daughter: Lessons from Leaders on Raising the Next Generation of Empowered Women” (which is even more poignant in today’s climate). Other great options are Alan Sepinwall’s “The Revolution was Televised,” “TV (The Book)” with Matt Zoller Seitz, or show-specific deep dives like “Breaking Bad 101: The Complete Critical Companion.”
As the years have gone on, Funko has not only stepped up the level of detail in their Pop! Vinyl figures, but also expanded their brand partnerships and own collectibles lines. Now it works with studios and shows ranging from HBO’s “Westworld” (pictured) to AMC’s “The Walking Dead” to Netflix’s “Stranger Things” to Adult Swim’s “Rick & Morty.” “TWD” is delivering some cool new Funko items in the form of a blood-spattered Negan and Walker Sasha figures, as well as a Negan with Lucille keychain and many Mystery Mini and Dorbz character options, while “Stranger Things” is getting in the SuperCute plush game with Dart, and “Rick & Morty” is delivering a Vinyl duo pack and Pint Size Hero blind bags.
“Mad Men” Props and Wardrobe
It’s been a few years since the advertising period piece came to an end on AMC, but the chance to own a piece of television history is happening now. ScreenBid is hosting a “Mad Men” auction of props and wardrobe, ranging from suits to wine glasses to ashtrays.
Game of Thrones Beer
All men must die. But before they do, they should try some of the “Game of Thrones”-themed beers from Ommegang, a Belgian-style brewery built on a former horse farm in upstate New York. (None of the horses from the farm were harmed in the decapitation scene from season one of the HBO drama.) Ommegang is currently selling its Winter is Here double white ale and its fire and Blood red ale together in a handy gift pack. It even comes with a cup — perfect for poisoning your granddaughter’s evil fiancée.
Star Trek: Discovery disco T-Shirt
Do you like “Star Trek”? Do you like jogging down long corridors with your roommate and talking about how you’re going to be a captain one day? If you answered yes to either, you need this “Disco” t-shirt, as seen on mutineer Michael Burnham and her very talkative roommate Cadet Sylvia Tilly in CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery.” If exercise isn’t your thing (and considering how much TV you watch, it’s probably not), you could always wear the shirt while being vaporized or sucked into the vacuum of space.
Marvel Knights Legends Action Figures
For viewers who watched “Defenders” and wished that they could reenact their own superhero scenes with a tiny Jessica Jones drinking beer and saying mean things to her friends, Marvel offers these action figures inspired by its Netflix television dramas. Each figure comes with a piece of Man-Thing, the most awkwardly named swamp monster in comic books. And don’t worry — there is no Iron Fist figure, so you can complete your Man-Thing without perpetuating yellow-fever stereotypes.
McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce
In a misguided attempt to be hip, McDonald’s — without officially partnering with either Adult Swim or “Rick and Morty” — brought back very limited quantities of Rick’s beloved Szechuan Sauce, pegged to the finale. When supplies ran out, fans in some locations rioted. after many videos were posted to social media — and, reportedly, one fan sold his car for a packet — McDonald’s released an apology and plans to bring back more Szechuan Sauce, with a more controlled rollout.
The Flash Snapbacks
Not all heroes wear capes, but if “The Flash” is your favorite superhero, you can show your support with these caps. Warner Bros. and DC apparel offer snapbacks, as well as one size fits all adjustables, and in a variety of designs from the classic red to a sleek black that is reminiscent of Zoom.
The Walking Dead Socks
Keep your feet warm (lest they get chewed off) with these official “Walking Dead” socks. After all, nothing says “holiday spirit” like cozy socks that feature your favorite .357 Magnum toting post-apocalyptic hero Rick Grimes. Or better still, socks adorned with the words that Morgan scrawled on his walls in the midst of his delirium.
