As we were putting together Variety’s annual salute to the accomplishments of showbiz women around the globe, something that would have been unthinkable even a few years ago occurred: New York jurors convicted power producer Harvey Weinstein of rape and criminal sexual assault. Weinstein’s reckoning, more than two years after a series of reports about his misconduct ignited the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements worldwide, bolstered those causes while once again casting a spotlight on workplace issues in the entertainment industry. The women on this report, tied to International Women’s Day on March 8, have made their mark locally and beyond. Their ranks include Oscar, Emmy and Tony winners, as well as streaming executives and producers creating entertainment for audiences from Nigeria to China. They spoke with Variety about their remarkable accomplishments — and hopes for the future.
