Our businesses, communities and institutions must continue to break down the power dynamics that lead to abuse. Silence plagues many industries and communities throughout the world, so this exposure within our own isn’t unique, but it does shine a harsh light on the issues we all know exist.
In a culture based on relationships, it takes real courage to speak out … to speak up. But speaking up shouldn’t require such bravery. The stakes shouldn’t be that high.
We are all responsible for the environments that we live and work in. This isn’t the first time we have seen a shocking, systematic abuse of power reveal itself, but it is all too easy to go back to the way things were, mostly because it’s uncomfortable to face. While the solutions may not take place over night, real progress will depend on how we choose to react.
We need to stay in this uncomfortable state and make it uncomfortable for anyone who thinks this type of behavior, in any form, is acceptable. Together we must make an intentional move to end the culture of silence and replace it with one of zero tolerance.
