“We’ve been so excited at how people have been responding to the film at all of our screenings and the type of conversations that we are having. And just realizing this film is really tapping into people emotionally, and not just women, but men as well. That kind of response is already so great and to get a nomination just feels like the cherry on top of a very delicious cake. I always feel like, ‘Did someone make a mistake (with these nominations)’? Like I’m going to get a call from my publicist and be like, ‘Listen, there was a mistake.’
These award shows are also really great for films like this one because there is a level of awareness that ours might not get otherwise, so I’m really grateful for that in hopes that more people will now be interested in going to see it. We’ve been trying to screen it to as many people as possible that were at Fox News at that time, including Megyn and Gretchen, though we haven’t heard if either of them has seen it yet. These conversations we’ve been having after these screenings have sparked this need for people to want to share their stories. It’s been very emotional. There is such a power to telling your story and if this movie gives even an ounce of bravery to somebody like a victim or someone who has experienced something like this to not feel alone and hope they can be empowered by it. Also, the reactions we’ve getting from men have emotionally moved me because I always knew this, but it was cleared up for me that this is not just a female issue. Men want to eliminate this as much as women do because they don’t want it for their daughters or wives.”

“It’s really gratifying when you work on something, and you know we all believe in it, so when it finally comes out and people see it, and the response was positive — it’s always nice when that happens.”

Beanie Feldstein (“Booksmart”)

“It feels very surreal. The most surreal part of it is that so many people I love — Kaitlyn Dever and Ben Platt — are also nominated; I love celebrating the people that I love. I love our movie so much and I can’t believe how lucky I am to get to represent us. I wish I could bring the entire cast and crew. I remember when Emma Stone got nominated for ‘Easy A’ and Hailee Steinfeld for ‘The Edge of Seventeen,’ I think there’s this beautiful lineage of these types of films getting recognition at the Golden Globes, which is so beautiful because I remember watching that happen and thinking, ‘Emma Stone got awards recognition for singing ‘Pocketful of Sunshine’ in her bedroom and dancing around. Those movies helped me growing up and helped define my comedy and career path; I can’t believe I get to stand among this lineage of beautiful performances. I’m so grateful to the HFPA for recognizing ‘Booksmart’ because it speaks to how insightful, powerful and unapologetic this generation is. It also highlights how these feminist women can be goofy and funny and silly and love their best friends so much.”

“I’m just glad — because you know, it’s my first time being nominated for the Golden Globes. I’ve only made seven films so far, I plan to make many more, so I’m just grateful that happened pretty early on in my career. My fellow nominees are such amazing filmmakers. Like Scorsese, there are people that I have admired. Regardless of whether or not I win, I’m so honored to be nominated amongst them.”

Todd Phillips (“Joker”)

“When I first pitched this movie to Warner Bros., I never thought about nominations or grosses. I was just thinking how we would push this through to achieve a finished product. As for why audiences were drawn to the film, it was a combination of things: obviously Joaquin and his performance, it was so immersive and he really dove into what he was doing. I used to joke with the DP during the shoot that rather than some massive visual effects, Joaquin was that special effect for us. Before we started shooting, I really knew how invested he was in this role and knew we possibly had something very special ahead of us. As for a sequel, it’s way too early [to tell]. I swear I haven’t even talked to Joaquin about that yet or what that would even be.”
