‘Downton Abbey’: Behind-the-Scenes Photos of the Final Season (EXCLUSIVE)

Matthew Goode returns as Lady Mary Crawley’s suitor, Henry Talbot.

“Mary’s in business mode at the beginning,” says thesp Michelle Dockery. “Her love life is pretty quiet. And then Henry Talbot shows up. It’s an interesting dance.”

“I’ve had my own issues in the past as a character,” says Hugh Bonneville (Lord Robert Crawley). “But it’s safe to say this season, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) and I are good as a team as a whole.”

Julian Fellowes calls this a season of resolution.

“The family (including Rose and her husband Atticus, played by Matt Barber) will have to reinvent itself if it is to move forward into the new world,” he says

At the end of last season, Tom Branson (Allen Leech) had planned to move to Boston with his daughter Sybil. Perhaps he’s changed his mind?

“It’s interesting to see how the men of the 1920s respond to being bossed around by a woman,” says Laura Carmichael of her Lady Edith, who’s now at the helm of the newspaper business.

Carmichael praises the the show’s crew, especially the hair, makeup and wardrobe department, who’ve “cranked it up a notch this season,” she says. “You’ll never see the same thing twice.”

“The men have come and gone, but the one constant has been the relationship between the two sisters,” says Dockery. “This season it reaches its peak between them.”

Bonneville jokes that what he’s going to miss most when the show ends is “not seeing the look of despair on Elizabeth (McGovern’s) face every day when he walks into the room.”

Lady Rose (Lily James) announced at the end of last season that she was planning to move to New York with her new husband.

Samantha Bond plays Lady Rosamund Painswick, sister to Lord Robert — and meddling aunt to Mary and Edith.

The production is famous for its meticulous attention to detail, from the clothes the cast wears to the props on set.

“Cora’s finding herself as an independent woman,” says Elizabeth McGovern. “She’s becoming more forthright and pursuing her own interests with more confidence.”

“It’s beautifully wrapped up,” says Dockery (far right) of the finale. “It’s remarkable how Julian Fellowes has crafted it for each of the characters.”
