Ryan Lochte

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte fabricated a story of being robbed at gunpoint during the Games. One police official, who spoke to the AP under the condition of anonymity, said that Lochte, as well as the other swimmers on the U.S. Olympic team — Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz, and Jimmy Feigen — were at a Rio gas station the same night that they claimed to have been mugged.

According to the official, one of the swimmers tried and failed to open an outside bathroom door. They then pushed on and broke the door, prompting a guard to confront them. The store manager asked the athletes to pay for the broken door, which they did, and then left.

The Daily Beast Outs Athletes

Early in the Games, The Daily Beast reporter Nico Hines wrote a story originally titled “I Got Three Grindr dates in an Hour in the Olympic Village” — which had Hines infiltrate where the athletes were staying and using the gay social networking app to see who he matched with.

The story included details that outed several athletes, some of which were from countries where homosexuality is illegal. The Daily Beast would remove the identifying sections and later took down the entire article. Hines was also removed from Rio.

Al Trautwig on Simone Biles’ Parents

NBC Sports commentator Al Trautwig was called out for insensitive comments he made on-air and Twitter about Simone Biles’ parents.

Biles was adopted by her maternal grandparents — Ron and Nellie Biles — as a toddler. Biles had called them “my parents” in press interviews. The couple were even referred to as such in a profile piece that aired on NBC on Sunday. However, after that segment, Trautwig took it upon himself to elaborate, saying Biles “was raised by her grandfather and his wife and she calls them mom and dad.”

This angered viewers who felt that Trautwig’s “his wife” comments were disrespectful to Nellie and the entire statement contradicted how Simone defined their relationship.

Boxing Judges Suspended

Boxing judges were suspended from the Rio Games after some controversial decisions. Boxers and coaches had been complaining about many of these, the most prominent being Russia’s Vladmir Nikitin’s (left) unanimous decision over Ireland’s Michael John Conlan (right).

Conlan lost the medal even though he seemed to have won all three rounds. Following the fight, Conlan refused to leave the ring, flipping off the judges and flexing his muscles to a cheering crowd.

Gabby Douglas

Gabby Douglas was blasted during one of the proudest moments of her life. As the gymnast took her third Olympic podium, she didn’t place her hand over her heart as the national anthem played. Critics took to Twitter, calling her move “disrespectful” and “unpatriotic.”

The gymnast took to Twitter to explain. “In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played,” Douglas wrote. “I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone,” she added. I’m so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country.”

Dan Hicks’ Sexist Comments

After Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu demolished the competition and world-record in the 400-meter individual, NBC viewers took to Twitter to call out announcer Dan Hicks, who said Hosszu’s husband and coach Shane Tusup was “the guy responsible” for her success.

Addressing criticism that his comment was sexist and downplayed her feat, Hicks said, “with live TV, there are often times you look back and wished you had said things differently.”

Egyptian Sent Home for Handshake

Following a first-round heavyweight Judo loss, Islam El Shehaby received a “severe reprimand” for refusing to shake the hand of his opponent Or Sasson.

The IOC said the conduct was “contrary to the rules of fair play and against the spirit of friendship embodied in the Olympic values.” The Egyptian Olympic Committee also condemned the actions and sent El Shehaby home.

Boxing Rape Attempts

Two boxers were arrested and accused of trying to rape housekeepers during the Games. Hassan Saada, a Moroccan boxer, was arrested on allegations that he tried to rape to Brazilian maids at the Olympic Village. Namibia’s Jonas Junias Jonas (right) grabbed and kissed a housekeeper who was cleaning his room.

Weightlifter Doping

Kyrgyzstan weightlifter Izzat Artykov was excluded from the Rio Olympics for doping and lost the bronze medal he won in the 69kg contest.

“His medal is forfeited and he is excluded from the Olympic Games,” the CAS anti-doping tribunal announced.

IOC Exec Scalping Tickets

Patrick Hickey, a top Olympic official, was arrested after illegally selling tickets to the Games. Hickey faces three charges which could lead to as many as seven years in prison.

Larissa Franca

Openly gay volleyball player Larissa Franca celebrated an early round win by hugging her wife Liliane Maestrini in the stands. NBC analyst Chris Marlowe commented, “That is her husband. She married Lili in 2013.” Marlowe later apologized for the on-air mishap, tweeting, “I’m sorry for the mistake today. Clearly, Liliane is Larissa’s wife.”

Hope Solo

U.S. women’s goalie Hope Solo was suspended for six months by U.S. Soccer and had her contract terminated. The federation’s decision came after Solo called Team Sweden “cowards” after losing to them in the Olympic qualifier.
