AWARDS PREDICTION COMMENTARY: “The Power of the Dog” could present a long-overdue chance for the Academy to finally nominate the talented Kirsten Dunst. After a stunning career that began with a snub for Neil Jordan’s “Interview with the Vampire” (1994), she’s delivered great performances in films like “The Virgin Suicides,” “Melancholia” and “The Beguiled.” If she campaigned for supporting actress, voters might be ready to show appreciation and gratitude for a long and impressive career. Her co-stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and real-life partner Jesse Plemons are exquisite in their parts, and interestingly divide their time in the film accordingly, with Plemons heavier in the first half and McPhee taking charge in the latter.

With a cast as talented as this, you’d think there would be a better chance at acting attention, but with the largest branch of the Academy weighing in on this race, it would need added assistance from key precursor groups. Australian actress Wasikowska has been an unrelenting and dynamic presence in Hollywood for over a decade. Getting her first piece of notoriety in the best picture nominated “The Kids Are All Right,” she’s proven to be a box office juggernaut (“Alice in Wonderland”) and a brilliant indie performer (“Stoker”). However, unafraid to bare her soul, supporting actress would be a far more interesting field if it included her astonishing execution.

When it comes to Dornan and the phenomenal Caitriona Balfe, their Pa and Ma are sensationally accessible for the acting branch to fall in love with. However, category placement will be the key to any successful awards campaign and honestly, the two seem to ride the line between lead and supporting. Each has its own scenes that could make for a good Oscar clip, but if the lead route is chosen, they’ll likely find themselves on the outside of two very competitive acting categories.

Oscar nominations voting begins on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, and will end on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022. The official Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022, with the ceremony taking place on Sunday, March 27, 2022.
