2022 EMMYS PREDICTIONS:
OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A LIMITED SERIES OR TV MOVIE
AWARDS PREDICTION COMMENTARY:
Hiro Murai, “Wheel of Fire” – “Station Eleven” (HBO)
HBO’s “Station Eleven” momentum picked up and led to surprises in both the director category and with lead Himesh Patel picking up a mention. With the double nom for Murai and “Atlanta,” voters may be more inclined to check his name off.
Danny Strong, “The People vs. Purdue Pharma” – “Dopesick” (Hulu)
A former winner for “Game Change” (2012), Strong is an Academy favorite, proven by his three nominations for “Dopesick.” It feels as though he’s bound to walk away with at least one of the trophies, and this seems like the spot to reward the drama.
Mike White – Series – “The White Lotus” (HBO)
Taking on an entire series is no easy feat. Former “Amazing Race” and “Survivor” contestant Mike White, who also wrote the anthology, is the only one in the lineup with those credentials. Also, a lighter selection for the TV Academy to make, he could be a slam dunk winner in the offing.

Michael Showalter, “Green Juice” – “The Dropout” (Hulu)
One of the double-dips for “The Dropout,” Showalter seems to be the more likely to have a winning moment, coming off a year where he helmed “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” Could he direct “Dropout” star Amanda Seyfried to an Emmy win in the same year he guided Jessica Chastain to an Oscar victory?
Francesca Gregorini, “Iron Sisters” – “The Dropout” (Hulu)
Gregorini is the only woman director in the lineup and has been an established presence in Hollywood for years after helming episodes of “Killing Eve.” She has many exciting projects coming in the future. This type of recognition will only elevate her status and her shot at landing more projects.
John Wells, “Sky Blue” – “MAID” (Netflix)
One of the lone nominees from a show that shockingly missed out in multiple challenging categories, the tough subject matter may help keep Wells, the well-loved veteran showrunner, somewhat in the discussion. Winning may be too high of a hurdle to clear.

About the Primetime Emmy Awards (Emmys)
The Primetime Emmy Awards, better known as the Emmys, are given out by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Since 1949, the awards have recognized excellence in American primetime television programming. They are divided into three classes - Primetime Emmy Awards, the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards (honors artisan achievements), and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards (recognizes significant engineering and technological contributions). The typical eligibility period is between June 1 and May 31 of any given year. The Television Academy comprises over 25,000 members, representing 30 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors and various artisans and executives.
