Yorgos
Lanthimos

Film Director

Lanthimos moved to the head of Hollywood’s creative class with “The Favourite” (2018), a darkly humorous look at personal and political machinations in the court of Britain’s Queen Anne. The film was an awards-season sensation, earning him Academy Award nominations for best picture and director and Olivia Colman a best actress statue. Those surprised by its quirky and perverse touches — as in, the pelting of naked men with fruit — had probably not seen Lanthimos’ previous two big-screen efforts, the twisted revenge tale “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (2017) and “The Lobster” (2015), about a man who must find a romantic partner in 45 days, lest he be turned into the titular crustacean. That film brought an Oscar nod for best original screenplay.
