Succeeding father Vincent atop French media giant Vivendi — comprising Universal Music Group and Canal Plus Group — two years ago, Bolloré has spearheaded strategic moves that got the thumbs-up from most media analysts. Among them is the sale of 10% of UMG’s share capital to a consortium led by China’s Tencent, who are already seeking to double that stake. The deal, based on an enterprise value of €30 billion ($36.9 billion) for 100% of UMG, was completed in March, just as Europe was slammed by COVID, and since then Vivendi confirmed UMG will go public in 2022. In the first half of 2020, Vivendi participated in Banijay’s takeover of Endemol Shine and now owns 32.9% of the new entity, which ranks as the biggest non-U.S. production and distribution company. He’s also chairman and CEO of Havas Group, one of the world’s largest communications outfits.
