Actor

A Chinese martial-arts champion who began practicing at age six, Wu began acting in 1995 in Hong Kong films and wuxia TV shows. He made his directorial debut in 2008, but his star truly rose in 2015, when he directed, starred in and co-wrote “Wolf Warrior.” The 2017 “Wolf Warrior 2” kept it going, raking in $854 million to become China’s highest-grossing film ever. Then came a starring-producing turn in “The Wandering Earth,” for which he put up $8.5 million of his own money to bail out director Frant Gwo when financing dried up. For a while, it was China’s second-best-performing film ever, grossing $691 million. Wu was ambassador for the 2019 Shanghai International Film Festival, which showed no U.S. films due to the ongoing trade war.
