Ulrich Wilhelm
BR/Ralf Wilschewski

A former journalist, German government spokesman and head of public-service broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk, Wilhelm in January was appointed to a two-year stint as chief of ARD, a consortium of the country’s regional public-television stations, with more than 20,000 employees and a budget of nearly €7 billion ($7.9 billion). His stated mission is to turn it into a cross-media giant by creating an integrated federal media alliance. The pubcaster recently partnered with pay-TV platform Sky on the high-end German TV hit “Babylon Berlin,” now in its third season. Wilhelm is pushing for a pan-European model that comprises European broadcasters and publishers as a counterbalance to perceived threat from U.S. digital giants to Europe’s “cultural heritage.”
