Ulrich Wilhelm
BR/Markus Konvalin

A former journalist and German government spokesman, Wilhelm has been director general of regional broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk since 2011. He is currently serving a two-year stint as chairman of ARD, a consortium of the country’s regional public-television stations, with more than 20,000 employees and a budget of nearly €7 billion ($7.8 billion). The pubcaster recently partnered with pay-TV platform Sky on the high-end German TV hit “Babylon Berlin,” now in its third season. Wilhelm has called for ARD to become part of a cross-media European alliance and continues to push for a model that combines European broadcasters, publishers and cultural and scientific institutions as a counterweight to the U.S. digital giants such as Google, Facebook and YouTube.
