Star India Group, a brand of 21st Century Fox, is the country’s dominant media player, with a market valuation of some $14 billion. While its portfolio of channels is enormously successful in its own right, the sports channels have become the real growth drivers. Knowing better than anyone that cricket is not just a sport in India but a religion, Shankar paid $2.55 billion for rights to the Indian Premier League cricket tournament through 2022 and $944 million for rights to all cricket played in India until 2023. He also invested $3.2 billion in Indian soccer, hockey and badminton. His other big bet: OTT platform Hotstar, which soared to 100 million active users a month. Shankar took over as head of 21st Century Fox Asia in December 2017, and has since assumed the role of President, Asia-Pacific at The Walt Disney Company following its acquisition of 21st Century Fox; he remains Chairman of Star India, with Disney India now added to his plate.
