President, Asia-Pacific / Chairman, Star & Disney India

That Walt Disney appointed a 21st Century Fox executive to head its Asia operations three months before the takeover was complete is testament to the enormous standing in which Shankar is held. A trained newsman, he began as a reporter with the Times of India, before his obsession with current affairs led him to shift to broadcast news, starting with Indian pay channel Zee TV. Offered the top job at the Murdoch-owned Star in 2007 after the departure of much better known figures, Shankar approached the task of reinvigorating the channels cluster by asking questions and listening to the answers. Now facing a mixed Fox and Disney team, he will see to preserving Fox TV’s dominance in Asia while streamlining the two studios’ theatrical businesses.
