Saudi Arabia Ministry of Media

Minister, Media

In December 2018, the former MBC Group and Rotana Media Group topper became Saudi Arabia’s media minister. Since then Al-Shabanah has been overhauling the kingdom’s nascent film- and TV-related bodies and has granted licenses to build and operate hundreds of movie screens, laying the groundwork for an industry in line with Saudi Vision 2030. Even before the country lifted its cinema ban in December 2017, Al-Shabanah backed the kingdom’s first feature, 2012 drama “Wadjda” by Haifaa al-Mansour, and announced plans to nurture local filmmakers. In 2019, Al Mansour’s “The Perfect Candidate” launched from the Venice Film Festival, one of two Saudi features there and both directed by women. The country’s first such gathering, the Red Sea International Film Festival is moving toward a 2020 debut.
