Goncalves’ career rode the rising tide of the streaming business. In 2018, AT&T appointed him CEO of Otter Media, its joint venture with The Chernin Group (TCG). AT&T subsequently bought out TCG’s share, then gave him oversight of streaming service HBO Max, which launched in the wake of the pandemic and sat side by side with theaters as WarnerMedia’s primary movie distribution outlet. In August 2020, AT&T restructured its leadership once again, naming Goncalves EVP and chief revenue officer of WarnerMedia, with a purview that included U.S. advertising sales, networks and HBO Max distribution along with Otter Media. As AT&T prepared to spin off WarnerMedia into a joint venture with Discovery, it sold off Otter holdings including anime streamer Crunchyroll, which went to Sony in August. Then in 2022, Goncalves was one of multiple executives who exited upon completion of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
