Joint Effort

Phillips was known as a master of the “bro comedy” epitomized by his “Hangover” trilogy, chock-full of partying, slapstick humor, wild misadventures and sexual conquests. Then came a pivot in 2019’s “Joker,” a darkly humorous origin tale for the “Batman” villain that was simultaneously touching and disturbing, and Phillips managed the seemingly impossible feat of putting a fresh spin on the creatively exhausted comic-book movie genre. The film grossed more than $1 billion and earned him Oscar nominations for best picture, best director and best adapted screenplay. The New York native, who began his career in documentaries (“Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies,” “Frat House,” “Bittersweet Motel”), is currently developing a biopic about wrestler Hulk Hogan with Chris Hemsworth attached to star.
