Epic Games

Founder / CEO

Between a new publishing arm, updating its Unreal engine and bringing 350 million monthly “Fortnite” players to a new console generation, you’d think Epic has enough on its plate, especially as “Fortnite” continues to double as a virtual platform for concerts and film screenings throughout COVID-19. But Sweeney’s tirade against Apple’s App Store policies has reignited waves of criticism against big tech monopolies and the cost on developers. With his own Epic Games Store requiring just a 12% cut of earnings for publishing on it (as opposed to 30% through the App Store), Sweeney believes a better future is possible even as “Fortnite” remains blocked on the App Store. Should Epic’s ongoing legal spat with Apple yield no progress, don’t be shocked if Sweeney finds a way to upend an even bigger industry down the line.
