Founder / CEO

Reaching 350 million players, Epic’s industry-defining “Fortnite” is now the focus of ongoing court battles with Apple and Google. Epic’s apps were removed from the App Store and Google Play in 2020 following updates that directed users to its own pay system, thus skirting the stores’ 30% cuts. In September 2021, a California judge ruled Apple must allow developers to send users to alternate pay methods but said Apple was within its rights to kick out Epic. Sweeney is bold, as “Fortnite” makes up most of Epic’s earnings. Still, the company has diversified and grown revenue in other areas, launching a storefront and publishing arm while lending virtual production services to Hollywood ahead of the 2022 launch for Unreal Engine 5, the next iteration of its flagship game engine.
