Epic Games

Founder / CEO

The man behind the global phenomenon “Fortnite” could rest on that achievement alone, as the free multi-platform game captivated an entire generation and became a household name since its 2017 release, with over 125 million players. Sweeney’s influence, though, goes beyond that. With the formation of Epic Games, he created the Unreal Engine to power only one game, “Unreal,” in 1998, not realizing it would boom and be co-opted for architecture, movies and car design. Sweeney made headlines this year when he cut Epic’s royalties from the digital storefront Unreal Engine Marketplace, giving creators an 88 percent share of profits. He also shook things up by deciding to bypass Google Play Store and release “Fortnite” directly to Android users—a game-changing move, indeed.
