John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour began in 2018, before COVID was part of the zeitgeist. Pre-pandemic, Sir Elton had 110 North American shows under his belt, 31 in the U.K. and Europe and 38 in Australia and New Zealand, and the signoff tour is continuing through next July 8. In September, his “Hold Me Closer” with Britney Spears — a twist on John’s “Tiny Dancer” —debuted at No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot 100, his 29th top 10 hit and her 14th. That came a year after his pairing with Dua Lipa, “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix),” expanded his record-setting span of top 40 Hot 100s to almost 51 years. In November, the Rocket Man feted his final North American stop with Disney+’s live simulcast “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium,” which opened with interviews, special guests bidding him adieu and then Brandi Carlile, Dua Lipa and Kiki Dee joining him onstage.
