Akil and his wife, Mara Brock Akil, have cornered the market on topical series highlighting the black experience. The NAACP-winning director and writer kicked off the year with the debut of The CW’s “Black Lightning,” which launched under their three-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. The previously unexplored take on the DC Comics Universe features a representative cast and takes a deep character dive that forgoes the traditional superhero origins story in order to highlight social themes of particular relevance to the black community. At the same time, the Akils were launching OWN’s “Love Is__,” an exploration of black relationships loosely based on the couple’s own story of family and ambition in past and current Hollywood landscapes.
