Film Director

Marvel execs were determined to hire a woman to direct “Captain Marvel,” their first film focusing on a female superhero. And they did: Anna Boden … except she was a package deal with longtime creative partner Ryan Fleck. The decision paid off with worldwide gross topping $1.128 billion. Early in their careers, the duo traveled to the Sundance Writers Lab to develop the script for their first feature, 2006’s “Half Nelson,” which Fleck directed solo, helping star Ryan Gosling earn an Oscar nomination for best actor. They’ve worked as a directing team on their subsequent films (including 2008’s “Sugar,” 2010’s “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” and 2015’s “Mississippi Grind”), as well as on episodes of “The Affair,” “Billions,” “Room 104” and FX’s upcoming limited 1970s-set series “Mrs. America.”
