Ahmed earned an Oscar nomination for best actor in 2021 for his performance as a drummer who suddenly goes deaf in Amazon’s “Sound of Metal,” cementing his status as one of the leading actors of his generation. He had already won an Emmy four years earlier for outstanding lead actor in a limited series due to his performance in HBO’s “The Night Of,” becoming the first Muslim and first Asian to win a lead acting Emmy. Ahmed, who has released several rap albums under the name Riz MC, also recently starred as a hip hop artist struck down by illness in director Bassam Tariq’s 2021 film “Mogul Mowgli,” which Ahmed scripted and produced via his Left Handed Films banner. On top of that, he’s leading Michael Pearce’s new Amazon feature “Encounter” and executive producing animated doc “Flee,” which Neon is releasing in December.
