Liu

Founder / Chairman / CEO

After an instructive business failure in the restaurant business, followed by a period selling health products, Richard Liu (aka Liu Qiangdong) started selling computer parts in his own retail business in Beijing in 1998. After reaching some scale, the business was hit by the SARS epidemic, and in 2004 he switched the operation from one with physical stores to online only. That was the beginning of an e-commerce venture, still dominated by sales of electronic goods, that in 2016 had net revenues of $37 billion. The company floated on NASDAQ in 2014, and though loss-making, has a market capitalization of some $44 billion. Wealth, youth and a dominant, aggressive personality – JD.com’s board cannot form a quorum without his presence – have made Liu an Internet celebrity in China.
