If anyone thought Johnson would be best known as the guy who wrote and directed the eighth installment in the “Star Wars” franchise (2017’s “The Last Jedi”), he disabused them of that notion with 2019’s “Knives Out,” a comedic whodunit worthy of Agatha Christie that earned more than $309 million worldwide and brought him an Oscar nomination for his original screenplay. It shouldn’t be a surprise, as he’d already written and directed a trio of well-received features, including the 2012 sci-fi time travel movie “Looper,” and earned a Director’s Guild Award for a 2012 episode of “Breaking Bad.” In February 2020, he got the greenlight from Lionsgate for “Knives Out 2.” While “Jedi” had its detractors, Johnson still has fans clamoring for him to helm a “Star Wars” trilogy now in limbo that Lucasfilm was reportedly once keen on him handling.
