After forging a career in traditional TV, in November 2017 Freer took over the wheel at Hulu. On his watch, the streamer’s subscriber base jumped to 28 million (as of May 2019), with aggressive marketing and investments in originals such as award-winning series, “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Disney now has big expectations for the company, as it gained control through the acquisition of 21st Century Fox businesses and by inking a long-term agreement with Comcast. Before exiting the company in early 2020, Freer worked to maintain growth at Hulu, positioned as home to Disney’s adult-themed programming (alongside Disney Plus, which launched in November) with a live-TV option for cord cutters. Before joining Hulu, Freer was president and COO at Fox Networks Group and Fox Sports Media Group.
