General Director
The foreign language film Oscar for Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Ida” in 2015 gave the Polish film industry a shot in the arm, and Smigulski has sought to add to that confidence since joining the Polish Film Institute in late 2017. The organization has increasingly backed international co-productions, such as Pawlikowski’s 2018 “Cold War,” which won best director at Cannes and was nominated for three Oscars; Agnieszka Holland’s “Mr. Jones,” a best film nominee at Berlin; and Jan Komasa’s “Corpus Christi,” which played in Venice. One priority for Smigulski has been to improve the distribution and promotion of Polish films within the country, and the institute helped orchestrate the introduction of a 30 percent cash rebate for production in Poland, which took effect in February 2019.
