Penny has established himself as an in-demand showrunner and producer through the success of “Insecure,” while emerging as a strong voice on issues of diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. He has been vocal about the importance of Black creators and producers having the opportunities to tell their own authentic stories. In August 2021, as his HBO pact expired, Penny struck a new deal with Disney’s Onyx Collective effort that aims to develop and produce content from creators of color and underrepresented backgrounds. He is also developing movie projects for Netflix and Searchlight Pictures, with a holiday film produced by Peter Chernin that will be directed by Penny and a film about the Compton Cowboys, respectively.
