Marinho ran Globo’s channels business before taking over in February as the boss of Globo, a key division of media giant Globo Group, which comprises free-to-air channel TV Globo, 26 pay TV channels, streaming platform Globoplay and its digital products, news website G1 and sports website The 45-year-old Marinho has a big job on his hands at Globo, which is facing strong competition from international streamers such as Netflix and YouTube. He’s helped by the fact that Globo owns one of Brazil’s biggest consumer databases, with more than 120 million IDs — and is using this to accelerate its direct-to-consumer strategy. Grupo Globo was founded in 1925 by his grandfather Robert Marinho, and since his death in 2003 it has been run largely by Marinho’s uncles Roberto Irineu Marinho and João Marinho, as well as his father, José Marinho.
