The Rome-born son of Italian film director and Fellini producer Turi Vasile (“Legs of Gold”), Vasile replaced Maurizio Carlotti in 1999 as Mediaset España CEO, having headed up Mediaset production in Rome. Vasile has always looked to Mediaset España’s bottom line, steering the free-to-air broadcast network ever more towards usually live, in-house-produced event programming. Produced at relatively low-costs, “Big Brother” “The Voice,” and stripped talk shows often grab huge ratings. Telecinco, Mediaset España core commercial flagship, has ranked No. 1 channel in Spain for seven of the last 10 years. ME’s 2016 operating profit margin was 22.6%, a figure most broadcasters would die for.

While obliged to invest in movies by government quotas, Vasile takes obvious pride, however, in Mediaset España’s movie co-productions, channelled via Telecinco España, which take in Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth,” J.A. Bayona’s “The Orphanage,” “The Impossible” and “A Monster Calls” and five of the six highest-grossing Spanish movies of all time in Spain. Loyal to his management and staff , having ridden out Spain’s double recession by acquiring rival Cuatro, Vasile, like all network heads, faces his biggest challenge yet: TV changing consumption models.
