She is a highly influential and greatly respected lawyer whose top clients include Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”), F. Gary Gray and “Selma” director Ava DuVernay. Her practice is in theater, television and motion pictures.

Shaw cut the deal for DuVernay’s recent critically acclaimed Netflix documentary “13th”, a hard look at the issue of mass incarceration. She notes that DuVernay had to “fashion a path to the finished work as the project evolved, which meant the deal had to allow for a certain degree of flexibility to allow that process to take place. Ava’s work is a great example of doing well while doing good.”

Shaw also teamed with ICM to sell longtime client Raoul Peck’s documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” to Magnolia, a project that has been in the making for more than 10 years. As the project found its footing, Shaw was able to use her professional relationships to reach talent like Samuel L. Jackson and Kendrick Lamar who “added enormously to the finished work. Quite rewarding to be part of that project from beginning to end and to see it come to fruition.” A native New Yorker, Shaw began her legal career in the entertainment department of O’Melveny & Myers.

“Everything you say and do leaves an impression, make sure it is the impression you want to leave.”

What or who inspires you?

“My clients because of their fearlessness in committing their lives to endeavors, which often offer so little certainty of success but for many their is just no alternative. I also live every day cognizant of the sacrifice made by so many so I could live the life I live and I want to do all of them proud.”
