Long a leading figure in the entertainment community, particularly when it comes to fighting for Black representation, Shaw’s recent accomplishments include cutting the deal for Nikole Hannah-Jones to adapt her Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times initiative “The 1619 Project,” which reframes the beginning of U.S. history around the year enslaved Africans arrived on Virginia’s shores. She closed overall deals for John Legend with ABC and Robin Thede (“A Black Lady Sketch Show”) with Warner Bros. Television, plus a first-look deal for Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood with Touchstone TV. Other clients include Regina King, filmmaker Ava DuVernay, multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe (“The Chi”), “Candy­man” director Nia DaCosta, actress and author Lupita Nyong’o and Misha Green and Jurnee Smollett, the creator and star, respectively, of HBO’s “Lovecraft Country.”

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career?

“Everything you say and do leaves an impression, make sure it is the impression you want to leave.”

What or who inspires you?

“My clients because of their fearlessness in committing their lives to endeavors, which often offer so little certainty of success but for many their is just no alternative. I also live every day cognizant of the sacrifice made by so many so I could live the life I live and I want to do all of them proud.”
