Kaling

Since coming to prominence as a writer-producer-actor on “The Office” in the mid-2000s, Kaling has been committed to bringing authentic and fully realized South Asian characters to the forefront of her projects, whether she plays them — as she did in her TV series “The Mindy Project” and the 2019 feature “Late Night” — or not. It’s the latter in the case of two of her current comedy series, the high school-set “Never Have I Ever,” which has been renewed through season 4 by Netflix, and HBO’s “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” which recently wrapped its second season. Kaling is exec producing the new adult-oriented HBO Max animated “Scooby-Doo” spinoff series, “Velma,” which inspired a mini-uproar on social media when it was revealed that the title character she voices had been changed from Caucasian to South Asian.
